Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has asserted that he still has a long way to go before matching Cristiano Ronaldo’s level at the club. The Frenchman made this claim after matching one of the Portuguese legend’s UEFA Champions League records at the club.
Mbappe was the star of the match as Los Blancos defeated Greek side Olympiacos 4-3 away from home in the UCL on Wednesday, November 26. The 26-year-old scored all of his side’s goals, including a seven-minute hat-trick in the first half.
Thanks for the submission!
Mbappe’s haul on the night took him to the top of the UCL scorers chart this season, with nine goals from five outings. It also saw him match Ronaldo’s goal tally after five matches during the 2013/14 UCL season.
Speaking to reporters after his Man of the Match-winning performance, the former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star was asked about matching Ronaldo’s heroics at the club. He said (via Madrid Xtra on X):
“Cristiano? I still have a long way to go to reach his level here.”
Kylian Mbappe has on multiple occasions expressed his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and named the legendary forward his idol. The Portuguese is arguably Real Madrid’s best player of all time and is the club’s all-time leading goal scorer. He scored 450 goals and provided 131 assists in 438 games for the Spanish giants.
Since his move to the club last summer, Mbappe has been Los Blancos‘ best player. So far, he has recorded 66 goals and eight assists in 77 appearances for the side.
It’s pertinent to note that Cristiano Ronaldo went on to score an impressive 17 goals in 11 matches in the 2013/14 UCL campaign, guiding Madrid to La Decima.
Kylian Mbappe beats Cristiano Ronaldo to an incredible record in Real Madrid’s win over Olympiacos
Kylian Mbappe was unstoppable as Real Madrid bounced back from their Champions League matchday-four loss to Liverpool with a 7-goal thriller win at Olympiacos. The host surprisingly took the lead eight minutes into the tie, but Mbappe responded for his side with a seven-minute hat-trick (22′, 24′, 29′) to turn the tie around.
In doing so, he recorded the second fastest hat-trick in the UEFA Champions League, only behind Mohammed Salah’s hat-trick versus Rangers in 2022. Mbappe then scored his fourth in the 60th minute to set an unprecedented Real Madrid record, one that even Cristiano Ronaldo failed to achieve.
He became the first Real Madrid player to score four goals in a European away match. His strikes against Olympiacos ended a three-game goal drought in club games, taking his tally for the season to 22 goals and three assists in 18 matches across competitions.
Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, remains the Champions League all-time leading scorer with 140 goals and 50 assists in 183 appearances.
